BMW M5 Overview
The
BMW M5 is a mid-size
high-performance luxury sedan aimed at buyers looking for an athletic
driving experience. BMW first launched the M5 in the United States with
the 1988 model year. Since then the car has been through four
generations of production, the current generation having been kicked off
by the 2006 model year.
Competing models include the Jaguar XFR, Cadillac CTS-V, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Porsche Panamera and Audi S6.
Styles and Pricing
BMW only makes the M5 in a single
trim level that comes with 19-inch wheels, high performance tires,
adaptive xenon headlights, adaptive suspension dampers, front and rear

Olufsen premium sound system with twelve speakers.

Powertrain
The BMW M5 is powered by a twin-turbo
4.4-liter V8 that pumps out 560 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque.
Rear-wheel-drive and a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual
transmission come as standard equipment. A six-speed manual transmission
is available as an option at no cost.
Interior Style and Features
The interior of the BMW
M5 is overall simplistic with few controls and gauges on the dash and
elsewhere. Combined with the extensive yet conservative choices in seat
colors and interior trim pieces, some might find the interior to be too
bland or boring.
Some drivers have expressed frustration with the iDrive system and
controller, complaining that the system is too difficult to use. But
with some practice with the car in park, the iDrive system and
controller become fairly easy to use.
The front seats can be adjusted in 16 different ways and are large
and supportive enough to accommodate a variety of body types and sizes.
The seats’ side bolsters are large enough to keep the driver and front
passenger firmly planted in their seats. The front occupants enjoy
plenty of room. Even more surprising is that the rear seat area is large
enough to accommodate up to two full-grown adults, which is a rarity in
a high-performance vehicle. The trunk’s space totals 14 cubic feet,
which can accommodate a fair amount of luggage or other items. Of course
the rear seatbacks fold down, allowing larger items to be loaded into
the car’s cargo area.
Overall Assessment
The BMW M5 is a brutal yet
graceful high-performance sedan. The car’s interior is fairly luxurious
and quiet, even when cruising down the highway. Plenty of creature
comforts can be had for occupants in the front and rear seats. But when
driven hard the M5 hits hard back, providing blistering acceleration and
handling dynamics that put to shame some sports cars. The car is large
and heavy, which makes it a great vehicle for traveling on the open
road. Despite its size, drivers who are used to smaller vehicles can
reasonably control the M5 in most situations.
Top competitor vehicles include the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Jaguar XFR and Porsche Panamera.
